What to Ask Before Getting a Solar Quote: A Homeowner’s Checklist

Getting solar panels installed is a significant investment – and like any major home improvement, the quality of the company you choose matters just as much as the quality of the product.

The solar industry has grown rapidly over the last few years, and while there are plenty of excellent installers out there, there are also companies offering headline prices, generic systems, and little in the way of aftercare. Knowing the right questions to ask before you commit can make a real difference to the system you end up with – and how well it performs for years to come.

Here’s what we’d recommend asking any solar installer before you go ahead.

Are You MCS Accredited?

This is the first question to ask – and if the answer is no, that’s a significant red flag.

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accreditation is the national quality standard for solar panel installation in the UK. It means the installer has been independently assessed and meets strict criteria for both their products and workmanship.

It also matters practically: you need to use an MCS accredited installer to access the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for electricity you export back to the grid. Without it, you’ll miss out on that ongoing financial return.

At Suffolk Solar & Electrical, we’re proud to be MCS accredited – and we’d always encourage any homeowner to check this before accepting a quote from anyone.

Will You Carry Out a Proper Survey Before Quoting?

A reputable installer will always want to assess your property in person before designing a system or providing a quote. If a company is offering firm prices over the phone or online without visiting your home, that’s worth questioning.

A proper survey should look at your roof’s orientation, pitch and condition, any shading from trees or neighbouring buildings, your household’s energy usage patterns, and whether battery storage or an EV charger might be worth incorporating.

No two homes are the same – and a system that hasn’t been designed around your specific property simply won’t perform as well as it should.

How Is the System Designed Around My Home?

Following on from the survey question, it’s worth asking how the system will be tailored to your property and your energy use.

Some installers offer a limited range of standard packages. Others – like us – design each system from scratch based on what will actually work best for that particular home and household.

Ask what panels are being specified and why. Ask whether battery storage has been considered and what difference it might make. Ask whether your roof can accommodate the number of panels being proposed. The answers will tell you a lot about how seriously the installer is approaching your project.

What Brands and Products Do You Use?

Not all solar panels and inverters are created equal. The quality of the components matters – both for performance and for longevity.

Ask which brands the installer uses and why. A good installer should be able to explain their product choices clearly, including the efficiency ratings of the panels they’re proposing and the warranty terms that come with them.

Be cautious of quotes built around unfamiliar brands with limited track records, particularly if the price seems unusually low. Solar panels are a long-term investment, and the components need to last.

What Warranties and Aftercare Do You Offer?

A solar system should continue generating electricity reliably for decades – but only if it’s installed correctly and maintained properly. Before going ahead, make sure you understand exactly what’s covered and for how long.

Ask about the product warranties on the panels and inverter, the workmanship warranty on the installation itself, and what happens if something goes wrong a few years down the line. Will the company still be there to help? Do they offer any ongoing maintenance or monitoring support?

A company that’s confident in the quality of their work will be happy to answer these questions clearly.

Are You a Local Company?

This one matters more than people sometimes realise.

A local installer has a reputation to protect in their community. They’re more likely to be reachable if you have questions after installation, easier to hold accountable if something isn’t right, and better placed to understand the specific conditions in your area.

It’s also worth asking how long they’ve been operating and whether they can point you to local installations you could speak to previous customers about. An established local company with a track record in your area is always a safer bet than a national operation with a call centre and no local presence.

Suffolk Solar & Electrical is a family-run business based right here in Suffolk. We’ve installed systems across Ipswich, Woodbridge, Stowmarket and the surrounding areas – and many of our customers come to us through recommendations from their neighbours.

Is the Quote Transparent and Itemised?

A trustworthy quote should be clear about what you’re getting and what you’re paying for. It should break down the cost of the panels, inverter, battery storage if applicable, and the installation itself.

If a quote is vague, or if the price seems significantly lower than others you’ve received, it’s worth digging into why. Corners are sometimes cut on components, on installation quality, or on the level of aftercare provided – and those savings can end up costing you more in the long run.

Do They Feel Right?

This might sound straightforward, but it matters. Do they listen to your questions? Do they explain things clearly without jargon? Do they feel like they’re focused on what’s right for your home, rather than just closing a sale?

The best solar installers are the ones who take the time to understand your situation, give you honest advice even if that means a smaller system than you’d expected, and make you feel confident about your decision before you commit to anything.
