A Closer Look: Before, During and After – How We Approach Every Solar Installation with Care

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Suffolk Solar & Electrical, with two big domestic solar installations keeping us firmly on the rooftops – one on a non-standard slate roof, and the other on a beautiful 1865 former school building.

Both projects came with their own unique challenges, but that’s exactly where we thrive. For us, solar installation isn’t about rushing through jobs or fitting as many systems as possible. It’s about taking the time, care, and pride needed to do things properly – respecting the building, the customer, and the craft.

In this blog, we wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at what really goes into our work – the before, during, and after of a quality solar installation, and how our approach sets us apart.

Before: Understanding Every Roof, Every Home, and Every Customer

No two roofs are the same. And no two customers are, either.

That’s why we don’t do “one-size-fits-all” solar systems or eye-catching “from £x” headline prices.

They might look tempting online, but the truth is: every property needs something slightly different – from the number of panels to the way they’re mounted and the type of inverter used.

Step 1: The Site Survey

Every installation starts with a detailed site survey. We look carefully at:

  • The age and condition of the roof
  • Orientation and shading throughout the day
  • The homeowner’s typical energy use
  • Any structural or access considerations
  • Potential add-ons such as battery storage or EV chargers

For the 1865 school building, we needed to take extra care assessing the roof structure. Older buildings often come with quirks – uneven surfaces, fragile tiles, or unique roof pitches. Our goal is always to find a solution that fits without compromise, protecting the integrity and character of the building.

The same applies to the non-standard slate roof. Slate is stunning, but it’s also delicate. We use specific fixings and mounting systems designed for this type of tile – and we never rush. Our installers take their time to ensure every panel is positioned perfectly, watertight, and secure.

It’s about more than just getting panels on the roof. It’s about doing it safely, respectfully, and in a way that leaves the property in better condition than when we arrived.

During: Where Craftsmanship Meets Clean Energy

Once the planning and design are signed off, we move into the installation stage. This is where our hands-on experience and MCS-certified standards come into play.

We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and care on site. That means:

  • Protecting the customer’s property — from driveways to gardens
  • Communicating clearly throughout the process
  • Working neatly and tidily, even on complex installs

For both recent jobs, there were moments where experience really mattered. The old roof required custom brackets and reinforcements, while the slate installation involved precision drilling and mounting to ensure no tiles cracked or shifted.

These are the details that make or break an installation – and they’re the things that can’t be replicated by “quick fit” or “off-the-shelf” solar firms.

Equipment and Expertise

All our installations are designed with longevity in mind. We only use quality, MCS-approved components from trusted manufacturers – panels and inverters that will perform efficiently for years, not just look good on day one.

We also consider how everything will integrate together. Many of our domestic and commercial clients now choose to include:

  • Battery storage, to make the most of their solar generation
  • EV chargers, for a full home energy solution
  • Monitoring systems, so they can track performance easily

Whether it’s a small home system or a large commercial installation, we apply the same level of precision and respect for the building we’re working on.

After: Leaving Every Property Better Than We Found It

One thing we hear time and time again from customers is how much they appreciate the tidiness and professionalism of our team.

We treat every property like it’s our own – sweeping up, removing waste, and making sure everything is finished neatly. For heritage and older buildings, that also means restoring roof sections where needed and making good any previous wear or damage.

When we finish a job, we want the only noticeable difference to be the sleek, high-quality solar system quietly generating clean energy on the roof.

And once installation is complete, our work doesn’t stop there. We always:

  • Test and sign off the system thoroughly
  • Register it for MCS certification
  • Set up monitoring apps for easy customer access
  • Explain everything in plain English – how it works, what to expect, and how to maximise their savings

It’s the aftercare that really matters. Our customers know that if they ever have a question or need support, we’re local, available, and happy to help.

Why Our Approach is Different

There’s no shortage of solar companies out there, but what makes Suffolk Solar & Electrical different is our philosophy.

  • We don’t do off-the-shelf installs.
  • We don’t advertise headline prices to draw people in.
  • We don’t cut corners to move quickly on to the next job.

Instead, we tailor every system – whether it’s for a home, business, or farm – to suit your roof, your energy use, and your long-term goals.

That means:

  • Transparent pricing from the start
  • Proper design and planning
  • Installation by experienced, MCS-certified professionals
  • Real people at the end of the phone

From a traditional slate roof in Woodbridge to a large commercial installation on the outskirts of Ipswich, we apply the same principles: respect for the property, pride in our work, and a commitment to doing things properly.

Solar for Every Kind of Property

While much of our work is domestic, we also carry out commercial and industrial solar installations across Suffolk.

For businesses, schools, and agricultural clients, solar offers a powerful way to:

  • Reduce long-term running costs
  • Stabilise energy prices
  • Improve sustainability credentials
  • Future-proof their operations

We understand that downtime and disruption matter in commercial settings – so we plan installations carefully to fit around your working hours and safety requirements.

Whether we’re working on a home, workshop, or warehouse, our aim is always the same: to deliver a reliable, efficient, and well-finished system that adds value immediately and for years to come.

Local, Trusted, and Proudly Family-Run

As a family-run business, we take huge pride in the work we do and the relationships we build. We live and work right here in Suffolk, and that means our reputation matters.

Every installation, no matter how big or small, carries our name – and we take that seriously.

So when you choose Suffolk Solar & Electrical, you’re not getting a “sales team” or a call centre. You’re getting Jamie, Will, and the team – real installers who care about your home, your safety, and your long-term energy savings.
