If you’ve been thinking about solar panels but weren’t sure how to fund the upfront cost, there’s some very welcome news from Suffolk County Council.
A new loan scheme – called the Warm Homes Suffolk Loan – is now available to eligible homeowners across the county, offering low-cost financing specifically designed to help people make energy efficiency improvements to their homes. And solar panels are right at the top of the list of eligible measures.
This is genuinely good news, and we wanted to make sure our customers know about it.
What Is the Warm Homes Suffolk Loan?
The scheme is a partnership between Suffolk County Council and Lendology, a specialist community interest company with considerable experience delivering similar schemes with councils across the UK.
It offers eligible homeowners access to loans from £2,000 to £15,000 at a fixed interest rate of 2.2% APR, with repayment terms of up to seven years. Borrowers may also repay their loan early without penalty, subject to eligibility and loan terms.
Crucially, Suffolk County Council is offering the lowest APR on this kind of loan amongst local authorities across the country — which makes this a genuinely competitive option for homeowners looking to spread the cost of a solar installation over a manageable period.
What Can the Loan Be Used For?
The scheme covers a broad range of energy efficiency improvements, and solar is firmly included. Eligible measures include solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar battery storage, solar thermal systems, ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, double and triple glazed windows and doors, loft, wall and floor insulation, and ventilation systems when installed alongside insulation measures.
For homeowners considering solar panels, battery storage, or a combination of both, this scheme could make it significantly easier to get a well-designed system installed without having to fund the full cost upfront.
Why This Matters for Suffolk Homeowners
One of the most common reasons people hold off on solar is the upfront cost. The technology makes strong long-term financial sense – reducing energy bills, earning export payments through the Smart Export Guarantee, and adding value to your property – but like any significant home improvement, finding the capital to get started isn’t always straightforward.
A low-interest loan at 2.2% APR, with flexible repayment terms of up to seven years, changes that picture considerably. It means the monthly cost of repaying the loan can be weighed directly against the monthly savings on your energy bills – and for many households, those savings will go a long way towards covering the repayments.
In other words, a scheme like this makes it possible to start benefiting from solar now rather than waiting until you’ve saved the full amount – and given where energy prices have been heading, starting sooner rather than later has real financial logic behind it.
Could You Use the Loan for Solar and Battery Storage?
Absolutely – and it’s worth thinking about both together.
As we’ve covered in previous blogs, battery storage significantly increases the value you get from a solar installation. It allows you to store surplus electricity generated during the day and use it in the evening, reducing your reliance on grid electricity and maximising the return from your system.
With a loan of up to £15,000 available, there’s meaningful scope to fund both solar panels and battery storage as part of a single, well-designed installation – which is always more cost-effective than adding battery storage separately at a later date.
Getting the Installation Right
A loan scheme like this is a brilliant opportunity – but it’s still important to make sure your solar installation is designed and installed properly to get the most from it.
As we always say, every home is different. The size of your roof, its orientation, any shading, and your household’s energy patterns all affect how a system should be designed and what it will deliver. A generic package that hasn’t been tailored to your specific property won’t perform as well as a system that has – and that matters both for your energy savings and for the financial return on your investment.
That’s why we always start with a free survey before designing anything or providing a quote. It means you get a system that’s genuinely built around your home and your needs – and you go into any financing arrangement knowing exactly what you’re getting and what it will deliver.
We’re also MCS accredited, which means every system we install meets the national quality standard – and crucially, it means you’ll be eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays you for surplus electricity you export back to the grid.
How Do You Apply for the Loan?
The Warm Homes Suffolk Loan is administered by Lendology, and applications are made directly through their website. For full details on eligibility, terms and how to apply, visit the Lendology website or the Suffolk County Council page linked below.
We’d always recommend getting your free survey with us first – that way you’ll have a clear, itemised picture of the system we’d recommend and what it will cost, which makes the loan application process much more straightforward.
